The Spinal Management Clinics (SMC) are a group of practitioners, primarily physiotherapists, who have specialist knowledge about spinal injury. Based on the most recent scientific research SMC practitioners assist with the rehabilitation of individuals with spinal injuries of both an acute and chronic nature through Functional Restoration programs. Functional Restoration rehabilitation programs have been shown to be consistently effective for chronic spinal pain. Functional Restoration is based on the ‘sports medicine approach’ involving progressive exercise to increase strength and maximize support for injured structures of the spine. Recent research shows that certain muscles become weak after injury and if they are not ‘switched on’ again, full recovery of the spine often does not occur. Functional Restoration focuses on specific exercises to actively retrain these spinal stabilising muscles. Function is improved with progressive low intensity exercises and education is provided to help understand injury and to learn to manage it effectively under the close supervision of experienced physiotherapists. Symmetry Physiotherapy is fortunate to have SMC practitioners available at both of its centres in Hoppers Crossing. |
