Alan Williams

l

Psychologist

Alan qualified as a registered psychologist in 2001. The tertiary training included a B.A with an extended major in psychology completed in 1996 (Deakin University) and a Graduate Diploma of Applied Science (Psychology) at the University of Ballarat in 1998.

Alan started in this field at a later stage of life which he has found very much to his advantage. He has worked in a variety of areas before commencing practice in Counselling Psychology. This included working in roles related to trade, sales, technical field work and allied health as a massage therapist. Alan has been running his own private practice on a part time basis for over twenty years. This practice initially focused on massage therapy, until he completed qualifications and obtained registration as a psychologist which he now focuses on exclusively. He has found that his own past experiences, both personally and professionally have given him a good understanding and the ability to empathise with people who are going through difficult times or situations. This has been enhanced by gaining experience through a variety of environments within the counselling field.

Since completing his tertiary studies, Alan has worked in a number of non-government organisations which has allowed him to develop a broad approach to his work. While all of these positions have been involved with counselling, they have been vastly different. This has included working with people with chronic mental health issues such as Schizophrenia and Bipolar disorders, through to family mediation, and more focused individual and couple counselling.

One of the major components of dealing with difficult situations in therapy is the relationship between the client and the counsellor. Alan takes a calm, non-judgemental and relaxed approach to the counselling situation because it is from this place that solutions can be found. Alan is very pleased to have recently started with Symmetry Physiotherapy and is currently available for consultations on Thursdays and Fridays. If you are not sure whether counselling might help, Alan would be happy to have a brief discussion on the phone to help you make a decision.
